Description: (Water-based cleanser) – A brightening antioxidant cleansing water (not to be confused with a micellar water) with no need to wash off. Contains Ferulic acid (antioxidant) and probiotics (fermented ingredient) to help preserve the skin (barrier). Vitamin C is for brightening here.
Good for: Oily skins and dehydrated skins. If you use x2-3 layers then dry skins could use this for adequate hydration (I just mean you may need to use a little more than intended). Sensitive skins may not like due to the essential oils / fragrance.
Directions (and how I use it): A daily-use formula. Can be applied with hands or a cotton pad (I don't get how you use your hands when the bottle comes in a pump specifically for cotton pad usage. Pixi do not recommend it to remove makeup (and neither do I) – but it is recommended as a secondary cleanser AFTER fully washing off makeup / SPF, or in the morning, to cleanse and prep the skin BEFORE application of your skincare products (so kind of like a skin prepper to remove dirt and dust before applying the rest of your skincare routine. Personally I would say therefore that this works like a toner.
This works so well for me BECAUSE I frequently state that I use toners as a replacement cleanser in the morning to wipe off the dirt from the night before and in the evening once I get home, I wash my face, so, before I sleep and I do my night time routine: I just use a toner (or now this) to swipe my face before beginning my routine just to prep my face! FYI I do NOT use this on or near my eyes.
I have been enjoying using this as my post-cleanse toning step. I use this like I do a toner since this also has beneficial ingredients for the skin (regardless of the essential oils which make me sad). So it usually goes in the AM: Cleanse, Swipe with this, serums, (moisturiser) spf. and PM: (cleanse earlier to remove sunblock/makeup). Swipe with this, serums, moisturiser.
In regards to the Vitamin C % (quoted from an e-mail pixi sent me after I asked about the % inside the product): '[this contains] a proprietary amount of Vitamin C which means it is: enough so it doesn't cause irritation even on sensitive skin but efficacious over time with incredible results. We used specially processed Vitamin C to prevent breakdown of active ingredient before it reaches the targeted epidermis layer cell to activate. It is micro-encapsulated in cyclodextrins, protecting it to provide potentiation of its efficiency and controlling its release, prolonging its action time.
To me I'm not happy that the % has not been disclosed. this could range from 1% to 20% vitamin C. I'm sure with continued use, this would provide skin brightening but it would take a long time because I'm sure this contains a very low amount. My skin usually tingles with 15-20% vitamin C and it does not even feel warm when using this product.
So – Pixi say that this is good for sensitive skins because of the gentle vitamin C addition BUT the addition of essential oils confuses me as those with skin sensitivities may not work with this product.

It's a shame because beneficial skin ingredients have been added but why is there lemon peel oil and the lot? I find it unnecessary.

Packaging: Plastic bottle with a top pump that makes it easy for you to place your cotton pad on top and press down to dispel the liquid. Very convenient. I wish all toner-like products were like this.
Texture: Very watery – absorbs fast and well. Also my cotton pad isn't turned orange (like the pixi vitamin C tonic was).
Good under makeup?: Absolutely
Fragrance?: There are essential oils BUT I don't smell a strong fragrance, or any fragrance – hence why I have been ok using this product without being overwhelmed – unlike using the Vitamin C tonic from Pixi.
How long have I been using this?: 3 weeks
The effect?: I'm sure with long continued use I'd see brightening effects but it has not been drastic at this point. But I don't use this for the brightening aspects, I use it to swipe the dirt off my face as I would a toner, which I think it does effectively!
What I like:
- The ease of using the packaging/pump
- Can't smell the essential oils (which I can't say for the tonic) so I'm happy that I don't smell a fragrance when I use.
- Fast-absorbing (can move on to the next step with little wait time)
- Didn't sting or irritate my skin
- Gentle enough to leave on the skin
- Helps remove some dirt from the skin (but absolutely would not use this as a double-cleanse, cleanser. This is for me, how I would use a toner).
What I don't like:
- Inclusion of essential oils, a big no-no to me
- No Vitamin C % disclosure (and the product't main catch is that it is a vitamin c cleanser so this is why I think it is necessary to know).
- No unbelievable brightening of the skin
Overall Rating and Conclusion: 4/5 (taking off 1 point for the essential oils) but I have enjoyed using this product to remove slight dirt/sweat/dust from my face. Does not sting or irritate. It's been great for someone like me who skips their AM cleanse, splashes with water and then swipes with this to remove dust/easy dirt, but….
Would I purchase?: I would purchase BUT if Pixi remade this with no fragrance/essential oils, I'd love it! I don't really care about the vitamin C % for me because I don't use this product to brighten my skin, if it happens as a side-effect, then that's fine! But I use Vitamin C serums anyways like the dear klairs vitamin C serum or the Timeless vitamin C serum.
